(17) Summer 2019 Anime Preview!
Today's podcast is all about Summer 2019 anime shows that we're into based on source material/trailers/etc, and we'll give you guys a little discussion about each. It's much shorter, but I also wrote a full post out!
Extremely happy Boichi is finally getting an anime series. If you haven’t checked him out before, Sun-Ken Rock is an awesome place to start. Ken’s an orphaned boy that follows the girl of his dreams to Korea and accidentally becomes the head of the Korean gang.
Boichi has worked on art for hentai, shorts for Trigun and Terra For Mars, and his own original works. Dr. Stone is the first to get a simultaneous English and Japanese release digitally, so the push to make him known is well deserved and well received. It follows the protagonist Senku as he tries to reanimate humanity from an apocalyptic event that turned everyone to stone. Using the science treasured during his childhood, he becomes humanity’s last hope and beacon of science.
It’s raunchy and silly, but this one is actually an adaptation from a light novel that has only been around in the last three years. This one I’ll call to Okaa-san Online, or Massively Motherly Mammaries Online Role Playing Game, or Oedipus Online.
When I heard the tidbit of how new the series was, it was definitely on my radar since so many amazing series take years or even decades to get to the point of an anime adaptation. Another point to make that even though it is an isekai, it does not disqualify it from being a good anime. There are plenty of isekai that are amazing (Gate, Tanya of Evil, Konosuba) and plenty of amazing isekai that don’t get the spotlight (Re:Monster, Rayearth, Log Horizon, Slime Reincarnation, etc).
For the actual show, I found it humorous because it leans into the silliness of the situation. Getting sucked into an MMORPG with your mom just to repair your relationship with her. There’s a lot of fanservice and meta humor on the isekai genre, so it might not be everyone’s cup of tea. So if you ever looked up Nina Hartley or Lisa Ann, yeah check this shit out.
It’s been a long time coming but we’ve finally got Danmachi Season 2 after the movie, Arrow of Orion came out. It’s still following the Hestia family as Bell’s OP powers are being tested against the other familia. There’s not much to be wild about but I love a simple story done decently. The characters are likeable although very common, and it brings me back to those MMORPG days when I’m ready to leave town to go out questing.
Really curious about the adaptation for this series. Most people could probably recognize the style as Atsushi Ōkubo’s, and this adaptation is done by David Productions. More specifically, a lot of SHAFT staff are in charge here so it’s not the Jojo material that David Productions is known for. Animation wise, the trailers look to do really well with the choreography and visual effects of the fire. The character designs look really awesome, especially the fire brigade suits, so look out for this being probably in the top 3 in rankings.
